About 6.5 million pound beef is recalled by Arizona-based meat producer JBS Tolleson, INC. Veuer's Natasha Abellard has the story.
You may want to think twice about the grab and go meals.
Million pounds of ready-made salads and premade foods, including entrees, burritos, wraps and pizza at several major name traders like Harris Teeter, Kroger, Whole Foods, 7-Eleven, Trader Joe and Walmart have been recalled because of the potential risk for listeria and salmonella contamination.
The recall comes from those issued by dozens of food producers, including Bakkavor Foods, Envolve Foods and Ruiz Food Products. Food makers advised the US Department of Agriculture about products they sent that may include ingredients like corn, dice and other vegetables that are possibly clogged with bacteria – from a single company, McCain Foods, says USDA.
The first recall, announced by USDA on October 17, involved relatively small amounts, from 217 pounds to 940 pounds of salads. Among the products recalled last week was Whole Foods' Santa Fe style salad with chicken sold in stores in California; Trader Joe's branded BBQ-flavored chicken salad, sold in several states; and Walmart's market-side fiesta salad with beef, sold in some of its stores.
But some of the last recalls involve far greater amounts of ingredients including 795,261 pounds of finished meat and poultry products such as Harris Teeter Deli-Bakery brand bacon, egg and cheese burritos, and chicken sausage, egg white and cheese breakfast burritos.
Bakkavor Foods, which supplies products to Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's, has production facilities in Carson, California; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Jessup, Pennsylvania. The products recalled may contain an onion ingredient supplied by McCain Foods that may be contaminated with salmonella and listeria monocytogenes, according to USDA.
"These recalls show just how complex and connected our food system is today. When you buy something from the store, it's possible that the company that produced it was three companies since," said Will Wallace, senior food policy analyst for the consumer union. " This is a big deal. It can affect tens of thousands of people, if not more. "
Distributed nationwide and produced between 27 September 2017 and 15 October 2018, most of Bakkaver's Harris Teeter products use the dates October 24 and October 25, according to USDA A 16-ounce Harris Teeter Deli-Bakery brand BBQ-style chicken handyman pizza has dates from January 7, 2019 to April 11, 2019.
Bakkavor also remembers Trader Joe's carnitas with salsa verde burritos over the same concerns. These products had dates until October 24.
Since now, there have been no confirmed reports of side effects due to the consumption of any recalled products, according to McCain Foods and USDA. [19659008] "McCain Foods recently identified a potential health risk related to its roasted fried, caramelized or sautéed frozen vegetable and fruit products produced at the Colton (California) plant," McCain Foods said in a statement to the US today p Friday when contacted for a first five voluntary recalls involving potentially tainted corn and a sixth for possibly tainted caramelized mushrooms and brennstegte tomatoes used in products sold at Hy-Vee.
