London Marathon replaces plastic water bottles with edible seaweed pods




Organizers of Sunday's London Marathon made edible seaweed fines available to runners to cut down on plastic water bottles.

Volunteers released more than 30,000 of the edible Ooho tangles at the Lucozade Sport station in Mile 23.

London-based boot store Skipping Rocks Lab made pods, which are tasteless and if not consumed to break. down within six weeks, CBS reported.

After London's marathon in London, garbage collectors picked up about 47,000 scrapped plastic bottles, the BBC reported.

The London Marathon took other steps to make this year's race greener, including reducing the number of gas stations from 26 to 19, according to the BBC.

Eliud Kipchoge in Kenya won the 26.2 mile event for a record fourth time Sunday in the second fastest time ever. His compatriot Brigid Kosgei swept to victory with almost 2 minutes in the women's race.

Kipchoge, who resigned in the last 10 minutes, completed the course in 2 hours, 2 minutes, 37 seconds on a blusty day.
