LIRR ticket prices increase with new MTA plan
Color changes on the Long Island Railroad started Sunday.
The exact price of LIRR depends on the zone, but according to MTA, the maximum price increase is 3.85%.
Most Long Islanders will pay more than $ 300 for a monthly ticket. Those in western Nassau County are the exception – they still pay under $ 300. Commuters from Zone 10, such as Ronkonkoma, Bay Shore and Kings Park, have to pay more than $ 400 per month. Anyone traveling from the East End must now pay $ 500.
The price increases were approved by the MTA Board in February.
Under the new plan, the riders must also pay more to use some of the MTA bridges and tunnels. It came into force last month.
Subway fees in New York City also jumped on Easter Sunday. The monthly metro ticket went up from $ 1[ads1]21 to $ 127.
MTA says it needs this extra income to meet the rising costs, achieve a balanced budget and provide safe and reliable service.
But some commuters News 12 talked to the service is not as reliable at first, and they wonder if the price increase will do anything good.
"I see many delays," says Lori Konikoff. "We have the app for MTA and every day there's something going on. A delay or something, and you pay all those extra money and the service will be better."
This is the second time since March 2017 that LIRR fares have gone up.
