A power outage at the Los Angeles International Airport has stranded hundreds of travelers after prompting airlines to cancel more than 50 flights and delay others scheduled on Thursday.

The more than three hour outbreak Wednesday night was due to a problem on an offsite substation and power was restored to some facilities as late as 1[ads1]0:45 PDT, the airport said.

Southwest Airlines temporarily stopped flights to and from LAX on Thursday to 8.00 am. PDT, after it canceled about 40 flights on Wednesday night, said spokeswoman Michelle Agnew. Eleven Southwest flights were canceled on Thursday, the airport said.

Transport security administration planned to move travelers, a process airport said, would take around an hour. Law enforcement removed the terminal to perform security failures, sending travelers to public areas.

"An airline granted passengers whose flights were canceled access to their checked bags, which resulted in the accidental introduction of prohibited goods into the safe area of the airport," TSA said. "Out of great caution, the TSA management at the LAX took the decision to reschedule the passengers."

United Airlines canceled four flights on Wednesday night and said it had to divert 11 others.

A half-day power outage at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in December 2017 asked airlines to cancel more than 1,100 aircraft, flowing thousands of travelers and raising airport infrastructure concerns.
