Kia and Hyundai recall Telluride and Palisade models due to fire hazard
Hyundai and Kia Motors are advising owners of certain models to park their cars outside and away from structures because they could burst into flames, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said this week.
The recall affects 245,030 vehicles of Hyundai’s Palisade SUV model year 2020-2022 and 36,417 vehicles of Kia’s Telluride SUV model from the same year, according to NHTSA.
Both manufacturers estimate that 1% of the recalled cars have the defect. Sales of the affected models have been halted in accordance with federal regulations.
Both models have a defective trailer hitch system that can let in moisture and cause a short circuit, which can ignite.
Documents released by NHTSA on Tuesday revealed that manufacturers still hadn̵[ads1]7;t figured out how to fix the defect. Hyundai will offer a temporary repair that will remove the fuse from the trailer hitch module to eliminate the fire hazard.

Both Hyundai and Kia said owners of the affected vehicles would receive notices by mail in October telling them to take the vehicle to a dealer for inspection and possible repair.
