If you’re having trouble accessing Instagram right now, you’re not the only one. Reports on the Internet (Downdetector, Reddit) notice problems with Meta’s more-than-just-photos app, with many people seeing screens that say they are not logged in, blank photo posts, “Welcome to Instagram” messages as if they have a brand new account, or feeds that stop loading after the first pictures. Many Verge Employees see similar issues while trying to access Instagram.
In response to inquiries from The Verge, said Instagram communications manager Seine Kim: “We are aware that some people have problems accessing Instagram. We are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. “
From 20:30 ET there has been a decrease in reports of problems, but some still say that they see strange messages or do not get access to certain features. So far, Instagram has not mentioned whether the problem will be solved, or when it will be.
The power outage does not appear to be related to any specific area, and other services are still working. The network interference tracker at NetBlocks have noticed Instagram’s “intermittent” problems are happening internationally, but there does not seem to be any major blocking going on anywhere.
We have also not seen any of the reports of power outages in the Instagram app that it started testing shortly after last year’s massive Facebook network outages that can tell users about major technical issues affecting the platform or features.
Update May 26 at 14.52 ET: Added statement from Instagram confirming problems and work to restore the service.
Update May 26 at 20.44 ET: Updated to notice occasional ongoing issues.
