In fact, Mark Zuckerberg calls for regulation of content, choice, privacy – TechCrunch

It's been a busy day for Facebook exec op-eds. Earlier this morning, the Sheryl Sandberg broke the site's silence around the Christchurch massacre, and now Mark Zuckerberg is urged to governments and other bodies to increase the regulation of the various data Facebook traffic. He hopes to get out of heavy control

The founder Publishing a letter simultaneously on its own site and The Washington Post, the latter is an ideal way to get your feelings on every desk inside the beltway. In the aftermath of a couple of years that have come with black eyes and increasing pain, Zuckerberg notes that if he had to do so again, he would ask for increased external control in four main areas:

  • Harmful Content ̵[ads1]1; He Will Have General Rules and References Social apps can be measured by
  • Election integrity – He wants clear governmental definitions of what constitutes a political or problematic advertisement
  • Privacy – He wants GDPR style rules globally that can impose sanctions on offenders
  • Data portability – He wants that users should be able to retrieve their information from one app to another

The story of why the letter breaks down every double as a new story of the social network. Struggles and missteps have defined a lot of Facebook's last year, with several controversies often swirling around the social network at one time. Not every CEO is asked to testify before the congress. Facebook houses and controls an incredible collection of data, which plays a key role in everything from ad targeting and interpersonal relationships to news cycles and choices.

"Legislators often tell me that we have too much power over speech, and quite frankly I agree" Zuckerberg writes three days after issuing a form ban on "white nationalism" and "white separatism". He continues to describe the company's work with various governments along with the development of independent supervisory committees before anyone can accuse the company altogether

"One idea is that third-party agencies should set standards for the distribution of malicious content and measure companies against these standards," writes Zuckerberg. "Regulation can lay the groundwork for what is prohibited and requires companies to build systems to keep harmful content to a minimum."

Zuckerberg continues to encourage increased legislation on electoral and political advertising. In particular, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development hit Facebook earlier this week with allegations that targeted ads are in violation of the Fair Housing Act.

The buoyancy calls some hole, but because it is probably what Facebook can do to improve on these four areas without the help of the government.

Facebook's malicious content policies have long been confusing, inconsistent and isolated. For example, Infusion's conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was removed from Facebook, but not from Instagram. Meanwhile, bad actors can only jump between social networks to spread problematic posts. Facebook should seek enforcement of its policies throughout its family of apps, work the public through its logic of why it does or does not remove things instead of having these discussions leak, and collaborate better with other social networks to coordinate the covered takedowns of it worst offenders.

For integrity selection, Facebook made a big advance this week by placing all active and old inactive political ad campaigns in keyword-searchable Ad Library. But after pressures from news publishers who do not want their ads to promote police articles to be included alongside traditional promotional ads, Facebook avoids them. These ads can still affect voters, and while being classified separately, they should still be archived for research.

On the privacy, well, there are tons to do. A large area where it can improve, allows people to completely opt out of search, including by phone number, to avoid stalkers. And better controls should be available for how Facebook uses your contact information when uploaded to the address book of other users.

Finally, Facebook has set foot with data portability. A year ago we published a deep dive on how Facebook only allows you to export your social graph as a list of friends' names, which cannot easily be used to find them on other social networks. Facebook needs to make its social graph truly interoperable so users won't lose their community if they switch apps. It would force Facebook to treat users better since departure would actually be a viable option.

Following these steps would be regulators that Zuckerberg not only pays lip service in the hope of getting a more soothing sentence.

As for election integrity, Facebook made a big advance this week by placing all active and old inactive political ad campaigns into keyword-searchable Ad Library . But after pressure from news publishers who didn’t want their ads promoting politicized articles to be included beside traditional campaign ads, Facebook exempted them. Those ads can still influence the electorate, and while they should be classified separately, they should still be archived for research.

n

On privacy, well, there’s a ton to be done. One major area where it could improve is allowing people to more completely opt out of search, including by their phone number, to avoid stalkers. And better controls should be available for how Facebook uses your contact info when uploaded in the address books of other users.

Finally, with data portability, Facebook has been dragging its feet. A year ago, we published a deep dive into how Facebook only lets you export your social graph as a list of friends’ names which can’t be easily used to find them on other social networks. Facebook must make its social graph truely interoperable so users don’t lose their community if they switch apps. That would coerce Facebook to treat users better since leaving would actually be a viable option.

Taking these steps would show regulators that Zuckerberg isn’t just paying lip service in hopes of getting a more lenient sentence. It would demonstrate he’s ready to make change that serves society.

What concerns me is that he keeps talking as if he personally is making these changes himself. Facebook is a company… with many, many smart, experienced developers (most of which are more skilled than him) so why does Mark Zuckerberg talk like he is the one personally making all these changes? The reality is, is that none of these ideas are from him, and that they are actually from his management teams. Mark Zuckerberg shold not be trusted. He is psychologically unstable, has an ego that allows him to believe that he is personally responsible for Facebook’s fortunes, and to top it all…, you should try and block Mark Zuckerberg from your own account (as you have a right to do so according to the Facebook t&Cs). You will find that you are unable to block him. It will tell you that the system is having an issue, or some other simiilar bullshit, but the one thing it will never allow you to do is to block this specific user on Facebook! One has to ask oneself exactly why Mark Zuckerberg feels that he should have the right to ignore the terms and conditions set out for the use of Facebook. The same rules apply to him as to every other user, so why exactly does this man believe that he should be able to breech Facebook’s rules with impunity… this basically makes a mockery out of every single time that Mark Zuckerberg has ever claimed to make Facebook more private… given that you can lterally never block him from viewing your information. Ever. That’s all anybody needs to know about MZ’s character right there.
