Huawei moves on 5G while politics is playing out

Large state telecom operators roll out 5G wireless advances in China as the country runs to close a technology gap with the US in the midst of a blue trade war.

The new generation telecommunications networks move data at blazing speeds and promise economic and technological benefits to countries where they are deployed.

US regulators earlier this week proposed rules to prevent telecom operators from buying from Chinese technology companies Huawei and ZTE, and to remove all equipment already in place to "secure the country's communications network."

The US federal government The Communications Commission said that the rules ̵

1; voted on November 19 – were part of an initiative to "protect the country's communications network."

The two Chinese companies have been accused of posing a threat to national security because of their close ties to the government of Beijing. Both have repeatedly denied the allegations.

AFP teamed up with US Vice President Huawei for Public Affairs Joy Tan to ask her three questions:

– What is your reaction to US regulators' proposals? –

Huawei has never had a major cybersecurity-related incident.

I believe that targeting specific vendors based on the country's origins will not make America's communications network more secure.

It will only affect rural operators and the most underserved areas of the United States.

So, we think this kind of action will further expand the digital divide and slow the pace of economic development, not make the network more secure.

On average, we procure $ 11 billion in goods and services from US suppliers each year. These companies cannot continue to sell components or products to Huawei. I have seen their business impact in the short term, and in the long term we will see greater impact also for US companies.

$ 11 billion creates about 40,000 to 50,000 jobs in the United States, so we hope these jobs are not affected in the longer term.

– How is the distribution of 5G going? –

South Korea and the United States launched the launch of 5G last year.

Already 3.5 million people are on 5G services.

China is moving very fast in terms of 5G distribution.

We also continue to sign more contracts globally, Huawei is definitely the leading commercial distributor of 5G. 5G has come faster than everyone expected; we think we are 12-18 months ahead of the competition.

Our latest 5G base stations are shipped without any US components; (instead they come) with our own or components from other countries, so we do not depend on the American components

– Do you have to work with the US? –

We want to work with them.

Huawi's principle is always to work with the best companies in the world, so that is why we continue to want to work with the US companies.

If the US government allows large suppliers to continue shipping components, we will continue to buy from them, even though we have our own solutions and alternatives.

Harmony OS has a different purpose compared to Android or iOS.

When we designed it, we had the future in mind. It's a lightweight, compact operating system, with powerful features. We use it for smart watches and smart screens in vehicles and for smart speakers first.

We will definitely continue to work with US companies including Google.

We are continuing to see if Google will obtain a temporary license from the US government to continue to supply us. We hope to see some good news next month or sooner.
