How to transfer old Android apps to a new phone

Telephone sets are fun things. You install them with a few quick clicks from the Play Store, but you never see the associated files or have direct access to what is downloaded. For the sake of simplicity, our modern mobile operating systems have covered the ugly internal operations of the app installation and taken file management out of our hands.

That's pretty much positive. Most telephony owners do not usually need to view application files or know where such assets are located. But now and then there is an exception – like moving to a new phone and suddenly discovering that a favorite tape from your old device is no longer available in the Play Store.

Well, take heart: Android makes it pretty neat Easy to find and save application files from a phone and then transfer them to another device for manual installation. All you need is a touch of power user knowledge.

If you don't know what an APK is

First thing first: the file containing an app on Android is called an APK or Android application package. That's what you download when you install an app from the Play Store, and that's what you need to find, store, and share to transfer an app from one phone to another.

Before Diving In, A Quick Warning: If an app is no longer maintained in the Play Store, it will not be updated any longer and thus the risk that it may not be completely secure or compatible with current Android standards. Using an app that is not actively updating is not the most advisable thing to do, and it cannot be done in the general case, and going off the beaten path and installing programs manually. So be careful and only if you are comfortable with the risks involved.

Did you get it? Good. How to get started:

On the old device

  • Download APK Extractor Pro from Play Store. It's free with ads or 99 cents (via an upgrade) for an ad-free experience.
  • Open the app, accept the terms and give it permission to access files on the device.
  • Find the app you want to save and tap the three-point menu icon next to it.
  • Select "Share," then select a destination you want to access on your other phone – like Google Drive or an email to yourself. APK Extractor Pro will need permission to access your files.

  Transfer Android apps

Find the file you want to transfer and share it.

On the new device

  • Find the file you shared by opening Drive, your email, or where you saved it. It will probably have a long name starting with the app's title and ending with ".apk."
  • Tap the file to open it. At this time, your phone will warn you that installing unknown apps is not allowed.
  • This is where it can be a little difficult. If you have Android 8 (Oreo) or later, you can tap "Settings" and you'll be taken to a screen where you can authorize the appropriate app (Run, Gmail, or whatever app you've shared with) to install unknown apps. On older versions of Android, when you click on "Settings", you are taken to a screen where you will allow permission to allow unknown apps to be installed at system level. (You can always return to Settings and take back the permission later.)
  • Press the Back button and follow the instructions to install the new app.
  • When the app is installed, it will appear in your app tray and your phone will show you a message offering to open the app immediately.
