How to see Tesla self-driving today
Tesla is currently holding an "Autonomy Investor Day" today at its headquarters in Palo Alto, California. The event was slated to start at 2 PM ET (but run a little late) and you can see it over or on this link. The event comes two days before Tesla will report its financial results in the first quarter of 2019, where it is expected that the company will post losses for the first time since the second quarter of 2018.
The company has been quite tight about what it will really show up at the event , although it is likely that Tesla will offer some sort of update on the effort to get a "full self-propelled" version of Autopilot into the world ̵[ads1]1; a controversial and often confusing term that the company often employs. To a large extent, the event will include a "dive into [Tesla’s] self-propelled technology and roadmap," and investors will be able to take test drives to experience [Tesla’s] Autopilot software first-hand, including features and functionality under active development. "
CEO Elon Musk said in February that he was" sure we will free up full driving this year "after Tesla removed feature from his website last October among Concerns that exaggerated the autonomous abilities of the company's vehicles, he first announced that the company was equipped with its cars with the technology required to enable "full self-driving" back in 2016, although that promise has changed in recent years, and Musk Now, while some experts claim that Musk refuses to use lidar sensors, Tesla's cars will never be able to drive themselves.
Musk recently said the event will "release investors from tyranny to have to drive their own car."
Tesla (and / or Musk) could also share more about the company's desire to turn their cars into divisible vehicles. The goal of Autopilot is to allow owners to rent their cars to others who need a ride, but it is unclear whether or when the company's technology will come to this point. One thing we know is that the man loves a show, so even if the event is investor focused, there is a good chance of some surprises.
Tesla has spent several years improving the Autopilot driver assistance feature by adding new capabilities through software updates over the air. Most recently, the company has rolled out a feature called Navigate on Autopilot, which allows Tesla cars to automatically switch lanes and take a driver from ramp to off-ramp on the highway. The company has also plagued a feature that would allow Tesla owners to "urge" their cars into a parking lot, which means the car would drive to them.
Last week, a Tesla critic discovered and shorted the company the movie that appeared to be a model 3 station that could show up in today's demonstration. (This weekend, Tesla was given an arrest warrant against that person, both to follow the company's Model 3 while driving in the Bay Area, and to perform a hit-and-run at the company's Fremont, California factory in February.)
