On Thursday, a Chinese bitcoin entrepreneur affiliated with Jack Ma gave a long, sparkling excuse for "excessive self-promotion" after boasting a planned lunch with Warren Buffett.
Justin Sun, 29-year-old founder of a cryptocurrency startup, also managing director of the Pirate Web site for music and movies BitTorrent, won a charity auction on May 31 by bidding a record $ 4.6 million for lunch Oracle of Omaha this week.
The lunch had been scheduled for Thursday at Smith & Wollensky's steakhouse in Midtown Manhattan.
But it was canceled after Sun made a bizarre series of posts on health problems, claiming on Tuesday that he suffered from kidney stones, just to say he was better off the next day.
About the same time, Sun's cryptocurrency executives, Tron, were arrested by Chinese authorities until Sun agreed to postpone the meeting, Bloomberg said.
Sun had tweeted the past few weeks inviting other bitcoin enthusiasts to lunch in an attempt to convince Buffett to renounce the skepticism of the controversial digital currency.
But Thursday, Sun issued a statement that read as it could have been written by a Chinese Communist Party official who has recently broken down bitcoin, a popular tool for moving money out of the country.
"My intention to have lunch with Buffett was because of my admiration for him and my enthusiasm for charity," Sun wrote about Weibo, a Chinese service like Twitter.
"But my immature, naive and impulsive behavior with my great mouth has made it a control and unsuccessful over-marketing hype and led to a significant series of unexpected consequences. "
It was unclear whether lunch had been delayed or canceled directly. Sun and his company did not respond to requests for comment. Buffetts Berkshire Hathaway's representative did not return a comment request.
It is also alleged that Sun has been investigated by Chinese regulators for self-trading and money laundering, a claim he has been denied.
