Here's why Jeffrey Gundlach believes that Trump can exit the 2020 presidential election

If US economy's thoughts next year, President Donald Trump can't even bother driving for re-election, "Bond King" Jeffrey Gundlach said Wednesday.

"I'm not even sure he's going to run," told DoubleLine Capital manager Fox Business's Neil Cavuto during an interview Wednesday.

"If the economy goes into recession and he can't pull out by clearing the charges, it's very little for him to continue."

Referring to historical precedents, Gundlach noted: "Lyndon Johnson ran for a while too and pulled out because of the war problems… Things can change." And just last week, he predicted a 40% to 50% chance of a US decline over the next six months, and a 65% chance of a recession over the next 1[ads1]2 months.

But if the economy remains healthy, he said Trump will win a second period.

Trump kicked off his re-election campaign with a rally Tuesday night in Orlando, Fla.
