Google forces some nest customers to reset their potentially compromised passwords

After Nest contacted its customers earlier this month, and encouraged them to better secure their accounts, the company seems to be taking the reins now.

On Friday, Verge reported that Google owned smart home products the company actually locks users out of their accounts and asks them to reset their passwords if they believe they are in danger. According to the website, the company said "it is planning to use the measure continuously, as the information is compromised."

The company also states to encourage its customers to activate two-factor authentication, which has been encouraged to do in the wake of several high-profile hacking events. During an event, a family was notified by their Nest unit of a seemingly ballistic rocket warning that turned out to be a shame.

During another incident last year, a woman said she was told via a Nest unit that a man was in her home and was going to kidnap her baby. This also proved to be a hacker's craft.

According to Verge, Nest began reaching out to customers whose password might have been threatened last night. Both Nest's main and support accounts on Twitter confirmed to users on Friday that the email they received was legitimate and that the measure was taken as a security measure.

"We have just sent out password recovery to customers [whose] account information may have violated other sites as a precaution to ensure that the owner can only access the account," the company's support account said.

However, verge-listed users should still be looking for signs of potential phishing scams in the event that some bad actors take the opportunity to obtain personal information.

As we have said before, always avoid reusing passwords and definitely activating two-factor authentication if you don't already have one. This is especially true for anyone who has Nest cameras in their home. A password processing is also always a good idea.
