GM’s new Cadillac Escalade is the most expensive, most powerful to date at $ 150,000

DETROIT – General Motors’ latest Cadillac Escalade will be the most powerful and expensive version of the full-size SUV ever when it goes on sale this summer, starting at around $ 150,000.

The carmaker from Detroit unveiled the 2023 Cadillac Escalade-V on Wednesday with a supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 engine that produces 682 horsepower and 653 foot-pounds of torque. That̵[ads1]7;s a significant performance improvement over 420 horsepower and 460-foot-pounds of torque for the SUV’s current V-8 engine.

“There is nothing like this in the industry,” David Schiavone, global product manager for Cadillac Escalade, said during a media briefing. “It will be the most exclusive and most expensive Escalade ever.”

Schiavone declined to reveal how many Escalade V models the company expects to produce this year. But given the performance and starting price of $ 149,990, production is likely to be low but very profitable. The price is almost double the Escalade entry model, at about $ 76,300.

Car manufacturers have increasingly added performance variants to their series as a way to increase profit margins before switching to electric vehicles, which can offer high performance but lower margins than gas-powered cars.

GM’s new V-Series, previewed earlier this year, is similar to current Escalade SUVs, but includes new makes and parts to improve vehicle performance. Cadillac says the vehicle can reach 0-60 mph in about 4.4 seconds, an impressive time for a full-size luxury SUV.

The vehicle features Escalade’s most expensive interior options, which include leather seats, massaging front seats, an AKG Studio Reference 36 speaker sound system, 38-inch OLED information and control screens and Zebra Wood accents.

Cadillac’s “V” or “V-Series” designation has traditionally been used for low-production cars. The Escalade is the first SUV to get the mark, as GM tries to squeeze as much profit as possible from current vehicles with internal combustion engines to help fund new electric vehicles and technologies.

Cadillac has said it plans to offer exclusive electric vehicles by the end of this decade, starting with the newly launched Lyriq crossover. The effort is part of GM’s overall plan to only offer electric cars globally by 2035.

Schiavone said the brand is still on track to reach its EV targets, but it will continue to offer gas models until then. He declined to say whether the Escalade-V would be the last major change for the vehicle ahead of expectations that it would be an EV.

“Cadillac is committed to a total EV future,” Schiavone said. “It’s already starting, but it’s not happening today. You will see both EV and ICE engines for several years until we are in our full EV future.”
