GM-UAW talks stop as Week 4 of strike approaches: source

United Auto Workers negotiations with General Motors have completely stopped to enter week four of the union's nationwide strike, a source close to FOX Business said on Sunday.

The main reason, the source says, is because GM refuses to make a commitment to bring back any product lines from Mexico.

"Negotiations are ongoing and progress is being made," a GM spokesman said in response to the source.

Meanwhile, third parties like North America's construction unions are trying to use whatever influence they have to get both sides to agree. Nearly 50,000 UAW members went to GM in mid-September.

GM's decision to open and invest in facilities in Mexico while closing others in the United States is a sticking point for many UAW members on strike.

"I would like to see more cars built here in America because it not only affects us, it also affects our communities outside this facility," Moshee Edwards, a UAW fence captain, told FOX Business. "There are so many smaller communities, so many businesses that depend on us."

GM opposes sewing as many workers per hour in the United States as in Mexico (49,000 versus 16,000) and have invested $ 23 billion in America over the last 10 years against $ 5 billion in Mexico.

The company is the largest car employer in Mexico, now home to assembly plants for brands including Ford, Toyota and Honda. Union workers have been at the forefront since GM announced in November 2018 that they would lay off workers and shut down American plants, an example being a plant in Lordstown, Ohio, where the Chevrolet Cruze was made.
