GM to press Cadillac as Tesla Rival

General Motors will make Cadillac's first electric car under the BEV3 platform, according to unnamed sources talking to Reuters. The electric Cadillac will be the flagship GM challenger to Tesla, the sources said.

An announcement, according to the sources, is expected later in the day, but details such as a timeline and specifications are unlikely to be revealed. GM has previously tried to make plug-in hybrids under the Cadillac brands, but these sold strongly and were wound up after just a few years of production.

GM's current EV portfolio includes the Chevrolet Volt, a plug-in hybrid and Bolt, an all-electric vehicle. But the mass market Chevrolet brand can't take on Tesla, which has the corner of the luxurious EV market. Cadillac, on the other hand, can be a worthy opponent.

The largest automaker in the United States two years ago announced EV production plans that included the construction of a dedicated electric vehicle architecture and launch it by 2021[ads1] along with a battery system with the two being used to develop into 20 new electric models in both the United States and China, the world's largest EV market.

Also in 2017, CEO Marry Barra told General Motors who planned to launch at least 10 new EVs for the Chinese market especially by 2020. Barra said last year that the company increased electric car sales by 1 million per year by 2026, with a significant part of the total sold in China.

Last year, General Motors opened a battery factory in China in partnership with local automaker SAIC Motor Corp.. as part of its expansion plans for the Chinese market.

Last year, Cadillac's then President Reuters Cadillac said he would have a "central role" in GM's EV strategy for the future, not only in the domestic market but also in China. Cadillac sales in China are rising, with last year's figure of over 200,000 for the first time, Reuters notes.
