YOUNGSTOWN
Eastern Gateway Community College announced that it will provide free or almost free training available to General Motors and adjoining workers who were and will be affected by idle from Lordstown Assembly Plant.
Jimmie Bruce, president of Eastern Gateway Community College, said Friday in addition to his traditional two-year college programs, EGCC offers shorter 3-year certification programs for commercial career drivers for trucking, machining and welding.
Bruce said that these programs can last as short as a month or as long as a year, but each gives the skills needed for workers to transfer to a new industry.
U.S .. Rep. Tim Ryan of Howland, D-1[ads1]3, said the announcement is bittersweet but can help families who could not transfer to other GM jobs around the country.
"For many people they can not go. They have roots in the valley, children in school, spouses with jobs, families. They need opportunities here. Maybe they will not do as much as they did on GM right out of the gate , but at least they will be able to capitalize on the opportunities available in the area. "
Those interested in the opportunity can call the EGCC at 800-68-COLLEGE and press the number six for more information.
In other General Motors news, the automaker announced Friday that many workers who face redundancies due to closure of plants will be able to transfer to workplaces on other plants.
In a statement, the company said that timekeepers would be able to search for 2,700 vacancies at other plants. The company also plans to offer training opportunities and access to training aid.
GM announced November 26th, there would be five factories in North America – one in Canada, one in Maryland, two in Michigan and the factory in Lordstown. [19659015] Strong American and Canadian economies enable us to provide these opportunities now when we position General Motors for long-term success, says GM's chairman and CEO Mary Barra. "Our focus is still on providing potential employees with opportunities for transition including job opportunities with other GM plants. We remain committed to working with local authorities, our unions and every individual to find suitable opportunities for them."
GM provided a list of facilities that require more employees to "support new vehicle launches that begin in 2019."
These facilities are Bedford Casting Operations in Bedford, Ind .; Flint mounting in Flint, Mich .; Lansing Grand River Assembly in Lansing, Mich .; Toledo Transmission Operations in Toledo; Spring Hill Manufacturing in Spring Hill, Tenn .; Arlington Assembly in Arlington, Texas; and skilled professions work available in several places.
In a flier sent to UAW Local 1112 members this week, the Union informed that there are 200 vacancies on Spring Hill; 35 in Flint; and 70 in Toledo. Employees may apply for these positions and are expected to receive approval or denial within 2 January.
