Forest couple on Royal Caribbean cruise where hundreds are ill from the norovirus outbreak

Don and Trish Hicks of Forest, Virginia weigh in on the norovirus outbreak on their Caribbean cruise ship on January 11, 2019.

FOREST, Va. (WSET) – It's not exactly Forest Forest's residents Don and Trish Hicks had thought of when planning to spend their 40th wedding anniversary at Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas Cruise Ship.

As of Friday, at least 475 people have come down with norovirus, a gastrointestinal disease.

The couple made a FaceTime interview with ABC 13, which shares what the passengers are handling, as the ship returns to Port Canaveral, Florida one day early.

That's where they boarded Sunday along with about 9,000 other people, for a seven-day Caribbean cruise.

Hickses has managed to avoid getting sick, but those affected have to stay in their rooms and everyone must use hand protection.

Nevertheless, they all said receive royal treatment during the process, and they are all receiving a full refund.

"It has taught us a lesson that our love has been for 40 years in high waves, low waves, and you know, and a cruise is a cruise," Don Hicks said. 19659003] They also get a free overnight stay in Orlando before flying back to Virginia.
