Ford shows off its amazing vehicle-to-vehicle charging with the F-150 Lightning

Thanks to Ford’s Pro Power Onboard system, the 2022 F-150 Lightning, the all-electric version of the US best-selling pickup, owners will now have the opportunity to share range with other electric cars.

This feature is exclusive to the Ford F-150 Lightning and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid, both of which feature Pro Power Onboard. The function mainly transforms the vehicles into mobile charging stations for other electric cars, as the built-in generators and high-capacity battery systems that keep charging can now give other cars extra range by simply connecting to the host vehicle. It is not only exclusive to Ford either, as the company stated in a press release announcing the feature that electric vehicles built by other manufacturers will also benefit from the feature.

The process is simple: Connect an F-150 Lightning or F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid with the optional 9.6 or 7.2 kilowatt Pro Power Onboard feature. Using Ford’s mobile power cord, the vehicle can deliver a level 2 charging speed that will provide an estimated range of 20 miles per hour. This number was obtained by testing the function with the Mustang Mach-E, says Ford. The Mach-E used to evaluate the performance of the Pro Power Onboard equipped an extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive. When using the feature with an F-150 Lightning, 13 miles range was added. Another 100 miles were recorded in one hour with the low-roof Ford E-Transit truck. Although this does not sound like much, electric car charging stations are becoming more accessible with each passing day. Even a fast charge of 45 minutes will probably give most people with completely empty vehicles enough range to get to the nearest charging station.

Ford details more about the process of charging vehicles with Pro Power Onboard:

“Customers can easily take advantage of this opportunity by using a publicly available power adapter to connect Ford’s mobile power cord to the truck. When connected to the 240-volt Pro Power Onboard socket, customers can use the mobile power cord to charge a range of all-electric vehicles using the SAE J1772 charging port. This includes the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Ford E-Transit electric van and the all-new 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning electric pickup, as well as vehicles from other manufacturers. “

The F-150 Lightning’s versatility as a power source opens the door for the vehicle to do more than just provide owners with a sustainable pickup. Ford’s Intelligent Backup Power can also be used to turn on lights inside a home, and acts primarily as an energy storage device.

“There are so many new opportunities to innovate with features and functions that are only possible through electrification,” said Patrick Soderborg, Ford E-Powertrain Systems Engineer. “This really hit during the power crisis in Texas in February last year, which left millions in the cold. The F-150 Hybrid helped many Texans stay warm and strong in these difficult times thanks to Pro Power Onboard – and we try to do even more with the F-150 Lightning. »
