Ford has invented a way to completely eliminate your sweet new car smell

We Americans love how the inside of a new car smells. It's fragrant like hot plastic and glue from the factory. Mmmm. But China's consumers do not. And because our country is terrible now and China is relatively not, Ford is working in a way to eliminate the old standby of New Car Smell.

Ford has filed a patent for a process that would eliminate the new car smelled so eagerly rendered by airfreight companies here in the United States. Brent Gruber, senior director of the global automotive industry, at J.D. Power told the Detroit Free Press that the smell is still the number one issue in the Chinese market.

"Unpleasant interior smell / smell is still the industry problem in that market," said Brent Gruber, Senior Director, Global Automotive, at J.D. Power. "To put it in context, it's almost twice as big as the problem rate for the second most widespread problem, too much fuel consumption."

Consumer feedback from Chinese buyers in recent years has been consistent. More than 10 percent of drivers complained about the problem according to 2018 J.D. Power China Initial Quality Study.

Ford used yet another 18 Chinese smell testers to wipe out all the offensive odors in their vehicles. Ford describes in his patent essentially to "bake" the car in the sun with the windows open and the fans on, to plastic, vinyl and other chemicals have released all its noticeable gases.

This is not Ford's first attempt to clear the air in their cars. A few years ago, we reported that Lincoln had put coal containers into the cars, removing every trace of new car fragrance.

It may seem like madness to us, but Chinese customers can be on something here. You see that the odor of the new car is caused by a process known as "exhaustion", and that is what happens with newly manufactured plastic and other different synthetic or treated materials in early use.

Lyndon Conrad Bell, a reporter who has covered the automotive industry for 20 years, found that the interior of new cars is primarily storage tanks for potentially harmful gases. Although the chemicals are usually only present in small quantities, the heat increases the process. Therefore, if you leave your new car out in the sun on a hot day, you may want to roll the windows down, instead of enjoying the delicious chemical soup that comes from your dash.
