FDA plans Strict limits for the sale of flavored e-cigarettes

NEW YORK – The US Food and Drug Administration plans to demand strict limits for the sale of most flavored e-cigarettes, including age verification checks for online sales, to limit their use among children and teens.

FDA officials told the Wall Street Journal on Thursday that the actions are expected to be announced as early as next week. The move is an attempt to curb what many say is an epidemic of minors.
"What I can not tolerate is a year of this growth," said Fayette Commissioner Scott Gottlieb in an interview Wednesday. [19659006] The new policy applies to flavored products such as Juul, which have become popular with youngsters, not the open tank-style systems sold in weapons stores and most widely used by adults, officials said.
Limitation of Minors from Entering Store
No stores will be allowed to wear them unless it limits minors from entering the store or creating a demarcation area.
In September, the FDA reversed the course and warned the industry to resolve the problem of raging teens. FDA officials had discussed e-cigarettes as a potential tool to tense adult smokers of cigarettes, but in September, the FDA reversed and warned the industry to tackle the problem of increasing e-cigarette use of teenagers or risk having their flavorful products withdrawn from the market.
Gottlieb said that the agency did not predict an "epidemic addiction" among youth, mainly driven by flavored products.

Also on Thursday, New York announced Gov. Andrew Cuom's administration plans to ban the sale of flavored e-cigarettes as soon as next year, possibly his condition the first to ban such vaping products often marketed as a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes.
