FCC to target overseas robokals and spam texts

The FCC seems to crack on two forms of annoying phone spam: international robokals and texts.

The Robocall epidemic has resulted in millions of people receiving robokals from numbers that look like their own, a concept called "neighborhood spoofing", but people have also been flooded with calls from international numbers.

FCC leader Ajit Pai suggested the adoption of new rules on Monday that would add another prong in the fight against faking caller ID, otherwise known as "spoofing."

"Scammers often call us from abroad and when do it, they usually spoof their numbers to try to trick the consumers, "Pai said in a press release.

Generally speaking, official said, federal statutes cannot go beyond the United States unless Congress specifically states otherwise, as RAU BAM's law does. Until then, the FCC was not allowed to make a rule to pursue acts abroad.

The rule will be voted on the FCC's August 1 meeting, and if approved, the FCC venue would break down either by seizing assets in the United States or working with other countries for a joint effort to target robo-calling scammers.

Lately, the FCC has been working with countries like India that track fraudsters working in call centers. The agency says this rule will continue this effort by keeping surveys open.

Although there have been successful examples of transnational cooperation, the FCC has had to release the persecution of many scammers because of international borders.

The FCC said it received over 35,000 caller ID spoofing complaints in the first half of 2019, and the collapse of total FCC complaints shows the severity of the problem. It is clearly a nationwide epidemic.
