Dog food recalled over potentially harmful vitamin D levels
Sunshine Mills, producer of several pet food brands, recalls three of his puppies and dog food products, citing potentially high levels of vitamin D that can lead to "serious health problems" including kidney failure.
The affected brands are Evolve, Sportsman's Pride and Triumph, the company says in a statement that is also posted on the US Food and Drug Administration website.
"Vitamin D when consumed at very high levels can cause serious health problems in dogs, including kidney dysfunction," said the company. Symptoms include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst and urination, excessive dryness and weight loss.

Several other makers have re-issued dog food because of potentially high levels of vitamin D, including Elm Pet Foods, using Sunshine Mill's facilities, according to the company's website.
Similar withdrawals are issued by ANF Inc., Nutrisca, Natural Life and the Grocery Lidl (for Orlando branded dog food).
