Now that many Americans are comfortable using Uber and Lift, millions of people count with finding a safe and convenient trip with just a few cranes on the phone.

But stories like the one about the South Carolina college student who were killed after entering a car she suspected of a Uber, questioned what riders can do to help maximum safety.

Here are some important safety tips for using rideshare services such as Uber and Lift:

Wait for your trip indoors

This prevents you from standing outside unnecessarily with a phone in your hand, signaling to pass drivers like you waiting for someone to pick you up. Instead, wait until the driver is near or has arrived before going out.

Confirm details when the car arrives

Don't just look at what time the driver comes. Be aware of the car's brand, model and color, as well as the driver's name and image.

Be sure to match the license plate on the screen to the one you see in real life.

Map your own route during the trip

This is especially important if you are in another city and are not familiar with the route. By monitoring your own GPS navigation, you will see if the driver leads you astray.

Don't share private information with your driver

This includes your personal phone number. The Uber app automatically encrypts both the driver's number and the passenger's digit to protect both sides privacy.

You should never share credit card information with the driver. All Lift and Uber prices are paid via the app, and tips can also be added there.

Ride on the back seat

If you are the only passenger in the car, riding the back seat gives both the passenger and driver more personal space. It also ensures that you can get out on both sides to avoid traffic.

Tell a friend where you are and who you are with

With both Lift and Uber you can quickly and easily share who your driver is, where you are and when to get there.

The "share status" option in the Uber app gives your friend the driver's name, image, characteristics and location. Your friend can then track the journey and see your estimated arrival time – even if he or she does not have the app.

The "Send ETA" feature on the Lyft app is very similar. It sends a text to your friend with details of the car, driver and how far you are on the route.
