We moderate comments. Our goal is to provide substantive comments to a general reader. By submitting submissions, we provide a room where readers can share intelligent and informed comments that improve the quality of our news and information.
While most comments will be posted on topic and not offensive, moderating decisions are subjective. We will make them as careful and consistent as possible. Due to the volume of reader comments, we cannot review individual moderation decisions with readers.
We value thoughtful comments that represent a number of views that make their points quick and polite. We work to protect discussions from repeated comments, either by the same reader or by different readers.
We follow the same standards of taste as today's newspaper. A few things we will not tolerate: personal attacks, obscenity, vulgarity, profanity (including expletives and letters followed by hyphens), commercial promotion, impersonations, incoherence, proselytizing and SHOUTING. Don't include web site URLs.
We do not edit comments. They are either approved or deleted. We reserve the right to edit a comment that is quoted or extracted in an article. In this case, we can fix spelling and punctuation.
We are looking forward to strong opinions and criticisms of our work, but we do not want comments to be cut down with discussions of our guidelines, and we will moderate accordingly.
We appreciate it when readers and people quoted in articles or blog posts point to errors or facts and investigate all claims. But these proposals must be sent
by e-mail. To avoid disturbing other readers, we will not publish comments suggesting a correction. Instead, corrections will be made in a blog post or in an article.
