Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan wife files for divorce
Detroit – Mayor Mike Duggan's wife has filed for divorce.
Mary Loretto Maher's filing Friday in the Wayne County Circuit Court came nearly six months after the couple defended the marriage in response to the mayor being challenged over his bond with a local doctor.
In a joint statement, Duggan, 60 and Maher, 62, wrote, "This painful decision has not been made easy" and asked the public to respect their privacy.
"Life is a journey with many twists," the statement said. "Today, a new chapter begins for the two of us. We have decided to separate ourselves."
The mayor and the city's relationship with an ideal is in the midst of an independent investigation of potential abuse of authority over whether the preferential right was given to make your date, which is dedicated to preventing premature birth.
Duggan compared to Dr. Sonia Hassan, who heads the program, has been publicly questioned in recent months.
The mayor, when asked, has repeatedly declined to discuss it and say, "I'll never talk about my personal life."
In Friday's statement, Duggan and Maher said they "had many serious discussions, have sought guidance, but ultimately feel this is the best decision for both of us."
"We may soon be married, but we will remain in close contact and we are primarily parents, "they said. "We will always protect and be present together in the lives of our children and grandchildren."
The couple concluded saying "we will not comment further" beyond the statement.
"We will continue to be supportive of each other, our family and the citizens of Detroit," the statement said.
A divorce settlement conference for Duggan and Maher is set for August 2.
Alexis Wiley, Duggan's Chief of Staff, said that Duggan will continue to live in the Manoogian Mansion, the official mayor's residence in the city.
Last month, Detroit's inspector's office launched a review of the mayor and city's relationship with the program director of Hassan, run by Wayne State University.
The survey came after the Detroit Free Press reported that the program received $ 358,000 in city scholarships and benefiting from a fundraising campaign as a city official led by the Mayor's request.
The mayor has promised "100 percent" cooperation with the investigation and said the allegations are "totally false".
The mayor has said that the city has never directed a cent to an ideal. The collaboration, he said, was directly with the university.
Duggan's statement came despite an email that was reviewed by The Detroit News from Wiley in 2017 to Hassan, affiliated with Wayne State University.
"Dr. Hassan, I would like to introduce you to Ryan Friedrichs. He is our chief development officer and the mayor has instructed him to launch a large fundraising effort to make your date. He will come in contact soon!"
University Representatives have pointed out Duggan's attitude that the program has been handled by Wayne State from the beginning. The 501 (c) (3) university has said, was never activated and never received or paid a penny.
Wayne State has said Hassan is a volunteer in his attempt to lead the program and that it was launched based on research done by the National Institutes of Health's Perinatal Research Branch at Wayne State and Detroit Medical Center's Hutzel Women & # 39 ; s Hospital, which Hassan played a prominent role.
