If your travel plans take you to San Francisco this month, you will need to add extra time.

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) closed one of the most important runways for repairs on Saturday, leading to hundreds of delays and cancellations of the flight. And the disruption will not end at any time: The runway is not expected to reopen until September 27.

Although some of the disruption may have been caused by other factors, such as weather elsewhere in the country, 109 flights were canceled on Saturday and 274 delayed, according to FlightAware flight tracking service. By 8:15 p.m. EDT Sunday: 131 flights in and out of SFO had been canceled and 328 delayed.

SFO said in a news release that airlines worked with the airport to reduce the number of aircraft to limit the length of flight delays (expected to be about 30 to 45 minutes on average). Flights have been reduced by 13% during this period.

The airport proposes that travelers book flights early in the morning before 9am PDT during the closure. Wednesdays through Fridays are the days with the highest delay, given that they see the most flight activity.

Work was asked for United Airlines issued a travel discount last month. United customers can change flights or connect to different cities at no charge.

"We have already adjusted our flight plan at SFO during the closure of the runway and affected customers have been proactively notified," American Airlines spokesman Curtis Blessing told USA TODAY. "According to our normal change process plan, if a change does not meet the customer's needs, they can make further changes and / or seek a full refund without charge."

Lisa Hellerstedt of Delta Air Lines said that there are no plans to grant a waiver, but that agents can use "situational flexibility" to help customers if flights are delayed.

Alaska Airlines on its website warns travelers about possible delays and says they have planned some flights, but does not mention any kind of waiver.

Southwest also states that it has reduced or scheduled flights. The airline does not charge a change fee.

USA TODAY has reached out to other major US airlines to find out their plans before the closure.
