Del Monte to sell Cambria grain packing plants, closing plants in Illinois, Minnesota

MENDOTA, Ill. – Del Monte Foods will close a grain packaging plant in Northern Illinois, with more than 600 full-time and seasonal employees.
The parent company Del Monte Pacific Ltd. announced Tuesday that the closure of the Mendota plant is part of a restructuring. Del Monte will also close a facility in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, and sell one in Cambria, Wisconsin. It says production will end by the end of the current package season.
Del Monte Pacific CEO Joselito D. Campos Jr. said that "the restructuring is a necessary step for us to be competitive in a rapidly changing marketplace."
The La Salle News-Tribune reports that the Mendota plant employs around 30 salaried employees and 100 hourly and up to 550 seasonal workers. It says that layoffs there will begin in October.
