Cub Foods joins other stores to ask customers not to carry guns openly
Cub Foods asks customers not to carry guns in their stores in response to security concerns following a series of mass shootings across the country.
The grocery store also said it will no longer sell e-cigarettes and vaporizers, a move the company said was made due to "growing health care issues and complex regulatory environments associated with these products."
Cubs change in weapons comes after other major retailers – including Walmart, Kroger and Walgreens – have rethinked their policy in light of the mass shootings this year in California, Texas, Ohio and elsewhere. Many retailers ask that shoppers not have weapons in stores while others, such as Walmart, also undertake not to sell certain items, including any kind of weapons and ammunition.
Reactions to Cub's announcement ranged from relief to contempt on social media.
Cub Foods, a chain of 81[ads1] grocery stores in Minnesota and Illinois, was previously a subsidiary of Eden Prairie-based Supervalu. United Natural Foods Inc. acquired Supervalu, including Cub and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy stores, in 2018 for $ 2.9 billion.
Two weeks ago, Steve Spinner, CEO of UNFI, said that UNFI intends to sell the Cub stores, probably early next year.
