Cruise is cut short after hundreds of passengers get sick on the Royal Caribbean ship

Due to the disease, the ship returns to Port Canaveral, Florida, Saturday, one day earlier than expected.

"All ship's guests will receive a full refund of their cruise fee paid," said Owen Torres, spokesman for Royal Caribbean. "We think the right thing is to get everyone home early instead of getting guests to worry about their health."

Cody Haddap, a passenger, spoke to CNN affiliate WESH on Wednesday and said he got sick after the ship left Haiti on Tuesday.

"We left the harbor where around 4 yesterday, began to get sick last night around 10. We have been quite limited to our rooms."

He shared a letter he received on Wednesday to his cabin from Cruise Line:

"During this sailing, there has been a small proportion of guests on board who have experienced gastrointestinal disease, believed to be norovirus."

Officials with Royal Caribbean said they are waiting for laboratory results to determine whether the disease is norovirus, the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in the United States.

In 201[ads1]8, there were 11 outbreaks of gastrointestinal diseases on cruise ships and five were determined to be norovirus. Royal Caribbean's recent outbreak was in 2017 on the Ocean Independence, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Haddap said when they came to Jamaica the next day, no one was allowed to leave the ship.

The Oasis of the Seas is one of the newest ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet and has over 8,000 people; About 3% of the people aboard the ship became ill.

Another passenger, Brenda Torres, spoke to the CNN affiliate WESH and said she had seen an increase in staff clearing common areas.

"From our balcony we can see the rock climbing," she said, "and after each user, they are actually hand cleaning every knob on the cliff wall."

Royal Caribbean is planning to completely clean the ship in time for the next sailing.

"Our guests are sailing with us for good holidays, and we regret this cruise fell short," Torres said.

CNN's Tina Burnside contributed to this report.
