First things first, Costco is great. It is a store that contains everything from favorite foods to groceries, of course in bulk. I mean, what more could you ask for? It seems many have asked for more plant-based alternatives because Costco will soon offer more alternatives to add to its vegan selection.
The plant-based food frenzy is taking over retailers like Burger King and McDonalds, so it's no surprise that Costco jumps on board to sell its own plant-based burger. Costco will launch Better Than Beef Burger ™ in stores through a new partnership with Don Lee Farms.
"We are excited to introduce the new Better Than Beef ™ Burger," Donald Goodman, president of Don Lee Farms, said in a press release. "This new burger, along with our growing vegan line launched fifteen years ago, reinforces our family's commitment to continuous innovation in plant-based proteins."
It's a catch, Don Lee Farms is currently in hot water with other plant-based meat brand Beyond Burger. Don Lee Farms produced Beyond Burger back in 201[ads1]6, but Beyond Meat continued to work with new producers the following year. Don Lee Farms is now in litigation with Beyond Meat (the owner of Beyond Burger) for allegations of breach of contract, negligent representation and trade secret theft. Beyond Meat also sues Don Lee Farms for breach of contract.
According to Business Insider, a spokesman for Don Lee Farms stated: "We are looking forward to getting the facts surrounding Beyond Meats's breach of contract and fraud in the lawsuit, which is set for May."
Regardless of the fight in court, Better Than Beef Burger ™ is still intended to hit shelves in Costco for the next three weeks in states like Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Utah and Washington, and I'm excited to try every plant – based burger on the market.
