Consumer reports: Listeria found in leafy green vegetables from stores in 3 states including New Jersey

NEW YORK – Consumer reports found listeria in leafy green vegetables from a variety of grocery stores in New Jersey, New York and Connecticut.

The organization purchased samples of green greens from Whole Foods, Costco, Acme and Hannaford stores between June 3 and June 19, 2019.

Of 284 specimens, six were obsessed with listeria monocytogenes – four in bundles or loose heads and two in pre-washed, pre-packaged salad blends.

"While it may not be surprising to find listeria in a small percentage of green green products that have been tested, it is always about finding bacteria that can make people sick in foods not intended to be cooked," says Karen Wong. , MD, Medical Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Enteric Diseases Epidemiology Branch.

Of the six specimens seized with Listeria monocytogenes, a strain genetically related to at least two cases of listeriosis (the disease caused by listeria) reported to the CDC. This product was a "triple-washed" Nature's Place Organic Spinach Spring Mix purchased at a Hannaford supermarket. A spokesman for Hannaford told Consumer Reports that it had not received any reports of diseases associated with this product.

The other products with listeria were purchased at:

  • Acme-unbranded, unbagged red leaf salad
  • Costco-bagged spinach from Boskovich Farms (labeled "triple washed")
  • Hannaford-unbranded, unbagged spinach [1[ads1]9659007] Whole Foods-unagged green kale from Lancaster Farm and unbranded, unbagged green leaf salad
  • Consumer Reports say someone probably still has some of these products in the home, but if you bought any of these, you should wash the fridge / sharp drawer thoroughly .

    Consumer Reports points out that the sample size was not large enough to support any conclusions about the safety of specific stores or specific brands, adding that the results show that more needs to be done to ensure the safety of leafy vegetables.

    The findings led to an FDA survey, but no results have been published edited so far.

    Consumer Reports did not identify the specific stores in New Jersey where the green greens were sold.
