Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, made the decision when he started the fast food company in 1946 that it would not be open on Sundays. He thought that the first day of the week should be for employees to have "a day of rest and worship if they choose." The decision, based on deep principles, is even more extraordinary given what Chick File-A provides financially.
Chick-fil-A had a turnover of over $ 10 billion in 2018, according to the company's business economy. This figure came from the operation of 2,400 restaurants in 47 states and Washington, DC. It was the 51st consecutive year with top-line growth, which means the company is rare as it grew through several downturns, especially the major recession of a decade ago.

Although McDonald's does not disclose traffic during the day, there are signs that weekends are particularly busy, which means that it can post 15% off Sunday sales. If Chick-File-A has a similar traffic pattern, Sundays can earn at least $ 1.2 billion. It is a sum that management has not only given up, but has done so with a sense of purpose that almost certainly will not change.
Chick-fil-A remains family owned. Dan T. Cathy is Chairman and CEO. Donald ("Bubba") M. Cathy is Executive Vice President. In the management of the company's statement of "who we are", the management says, "It's not about being closed. It's about how we spend that time."
Chick File A has several obstacles to opening a franchise. An advantage of ownership, however, is that the company is among the fast food operators who have healthy food options. This is probably an advantage as fast food members move away from high calorie menu items.
While $ 1.2 billion in revenue is a lot to give up, the Chick-fil-As approach to what days a business is going to be open isn't going to change soon. Employees are happy with the management, at least according to external research. Glass door listed it as one of the 100 best places to work in 2017. It has also been voted one of the country's best fast food operators.
