Panicked travelers left carrying bags and strolled for terminal exits at Newark Liberty International Airport on Monday night, just as the busy three-day Labor Day weekend ended.
It was not immediately clear what had led to the evacuation, which happened around 8:30 am. Police officers with tactical rifles converged on the terminal, while some travelers sought refuge on the airport tarmac.
Benjamin Branham, a port spokesman for New York and New Jersey, who operates the airport, said there had been a false report and there was no danger to any passengers.
The Port Authority did not immediately elaborate on what had led to the evacuation.
