Car2Go Says 100 High End Vehicles Fraudulent Hired In Chicago Through App
Police question more than a dozen people over the theft of 100 high-end cars in Chicago after a car company reported that some of their fleet was stolen by the mobile app, and forced to temporarily shut down service in Chicago The department said in a statement Wednesday that the car company, car2go or SHARE NOW, notified the authorities that the vehicles may have been taken through "misleading" practices through the company's app.
"Due to the information provided by the company, many vehicles have been restored and "The Chicago Police Department is working with the company to determine if there are other cars that cannot be accounted for."
CBS Chicago reported that many of the vehicles allegedly used to commit other crimes. Police gave no details on how the vehicles were used, but said the investigation was ongoing.
Kendell Kelton, a spokesman for SHARE NOW, f said BuzzFeed News. No customer's personal information had been compromised and that the incident was isolated to Chicago
"This is an instance of fraud, isolated to Chicago, and we are currently working with law enforcement," Kelton said in a email.
Based on a great deal of caution, the company said it was temporarily suspending its Chicago service.
From Wednesday afternoon, 1[ads1]00 cars, including at least 50 Mercedes-Benz cars, believed to be in the Chicago area, were unclear, police said. More than a dozen people of interest had been questioned.
According to its website, car2go manages a fleet of about 14,000 Mercedes-Benz and smart cars in more than 20 cities in North America, Europe and Asia. It has recently joined the BMW car sharing service DriveNow to SHARE NOW.
