The world's most expensive new car makes its North American debut this week at the world's premier luxury car show, the Pebble Beach Concours D & # 39; Elegance, which kicks off Tuesday in Monterey, California.

Bugatti debuted the outstanding $ 18.68 million in La Voiture Noire, which translates to The Black Car, at the Geneva International Motor Show in March. The car pays homage to the Art Deco design of the Type 57SC Atlantic, one of the most sought after classic cars in the world. Designed in 1

934 by Jean Bugatti, the oldest son of the company's founder Ettore Bugatti, and only four were created. Three are accounted for while the fourth, lost during World War II, would be valued at well over $ 100 million if found today.

The new La Voiture Noire packs 1,500 horsepower and 1180 kilos of torque, driving it from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds. It has a quadruple W-16 engine with a top speed of 261 mph.

"We produced a real disposable car, a unit car we call the car's haute couture," said Achim Anscheidt, Bugatti's design director. "It's not just a car anymore, it's really more like a work of art in line with the very exclusive fashion and luxury brands in France."

Bugatti limited La Voiture Noire's top speed to give it more tournament refinement. The company's earlier model of limited driving, Divo, also traded top speed for the focus on corner work.

"High-speed mode was not relevant to these cars because they had a much different focus. Divo is made for corners and La Voiture Noire is a Grand Turismo," said Tim Bravo, a Bugatti spokesman.

The car at Pebble Beach has already been purchased, but Bugatti does not say who owns it. Rumored buyers have included football star Cristiano Ronaldo and Ferdinand Piech, former chairman of Volkswagen, which owns Bugatti.

"As soon as a customer makes a public claim, we can refer to it, but other than that we will honor a customer's anonymity and he will decide whether he will be anonymous or not," Bravo said.

Whatever it is, he is not driving the car soon. Bravo said that Bugatti still needs about 2 ½ years to finish and deliver the car.

Bugatti has been making unique and bespoke cars for its ultra-wealthy customers for more than 100 years. The average buyer of Bugatti owns about 42 vehicles, five homes, three private jets, three helicopters and a yacht, according to Bugatti.

"When you are wealthy, what you want most is your wealth to feel special and unique – and someone who pays $ 18 million for a car may claim & # 39; I bought the most expensive car ever, see where special I am, "said Karl Brauer, an Autotrader analyst.

After becoming part of the VW Group in 1998, the company scrapped custom models in favor of more mass-produced, but still incredibly limited, supercars.

In the years that followed, the company produced 450 Veyron supercars that launched in 2005 and recently completed 200 of the 500 planned Bugatti Chirons, starting at $ 3 million.

The French supercar manufacturer envisioned something more exclusive than that of its loyal customers and returned to its roots-building coach to offer the Bugatti Divo at the Pebble Beach Concours 2018.

The $ 5.8 million supercar, which based on Chiron, was shown to a select group of Chiron customers on Pebble Beach last year. The 40 Divos limited production was sold out the same day, Bugatti said at the time.

"I think it's brilliant on their part because they claim they come back to their roots and once upon a time when cars came out they were almost all bus builders and they were hard to afford and it was quite first class experience, "Brauer said.

La Voiture Noire represents another step in return to the ultra-exclusive legacy.

How exclusive? Well, Bugatti only addressed a customer with the sketches and the idea of the car.

The company says he bought it on site.

"The idea of La Voiture Noire was 100% born in Bugatti, it does not come from the customer. But because it is one of one, the customer enjoys the freedom to create specific details with us," said Anscheidt. [19659002] Some of these specifications include the car's six rear pipes, the same as the Type 57SC, a detail recommended by the buyer's wife.

The buyer also had total design control over the interior.

Especially the Geneva exhibition car revealed black windows that hide the interior. The French carmaker says it's because the car doesn't have one yet.

"When it comes to the interior, we wanted to make sure that the customer who decided to buy that car could really create the interior to their own prosperity," said Anscheidt. "So, our designers work hand in hand with the customer to make the interior just 100% the way he wants," he continued.

Despite the price tag, custom car building is a good business strategy according to analysts like Brauer, since it minimizes the risk associated with designing new models. Simply put, if the buyer is already known, there is no speculation as to what the demand might be.

"These guys almost didn't need to use anything. It was a phone call and some sketches to a customer to say & # 39; what about $ 18 million for this. & # 39; Before they ever had to fire one metal manufacturing machine or hand-knit leather, they had a sale, "Brauer said.

Hans Wurl, a specialist at the classic car auction company Gooding, called it a "shocker of a valuation." For collectors, it is difficult to value a car like La Voiture because it is one of the kinds and has never been publicly auctioned before, making it difficult to estimate how much someone will pay for it.

"I think if it came to an open auction today, there is a very good chance that it would not reach the number it was reselling," he said. "But that doesn't mean there is no big investment over a period of decades."

The company showed the new Bugatti in Geneva and Concorso d & # 39; Eleganza Villa d & # 39; Este in Italy in May. But this is the first time it is shown in the United States

The Concours at Pebble Beach is the industry's most prestigious car show with automakers who often spend the six days in Monterey debuting their most expensive new cars and concept cars.

La Voiture Noire is not the most expensive car on the lot.

A 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO was sold in last year's Pebble Beach car week for a record $ 48.4 million.

"As ridiculous as it may sound to a normal person like you and me, La Voiture Noire is a very affordable car," Bravo said.

Bugatti plans to roll out at least four custom cars over the next few years, with another supercar rumored to be somewhere between Divo and La Voiture Noire expected to be unveiled at this year's Pebble Beach Concours.
