Last week, there were a number of reports that Netflix would no longer work on some smart TVs from December 2. Turns out, that's not entirely true.
Samsung was one of the first to release, informing customers that some models would no longer support the Netflix app, meaning the streaming service would not be playable.
Reports indicated that not only Samsung models were affected. Brands like Vizio and Roku would also stop supporting the streaming service's app.
We reached out to Netflix Australia who confirmed the news.
"December 2, Netflix will no longer be supported on a small number of older devices due to We have notified all affected members with more information about alternative devices we support so that they can continue to enjoy Netflix continuously," a spokesperson for Netflix.
But we wanted to know which models were affected and why .
Why won't Netflix work anymore?
It is understood by everyone to come to a question about digital rights management. Some of the first smart TVs in the early 2010s came with Windows Media DRM (WMDRM), a predecessor to Windows Play Ready, which is no longer in use.
TL; DR's streaming services, like Netflix, require devices to use a rights registration service to block unauthorized recording or playback. The TVs that had WMDRM built into it when it was the primary DRM service will no longer be able to play Netflix because the service will no longer accept it.
Why Disney + Might Not Work On All Devices
It has recently emerged that some devices may not be able to stream Disney + content due to security software. Obviously this is going to be a big factor for someone deciding whether or not to sign up for the service, so we've looked into which devices will be fine and how it works.
What models are affected in Australia?
This is where things get a little curly. Gizmodo Australia reached out to Samsung, Sony, Hisense, Panasonic and Philips to see if any of their smart TVs would be affected.
A Sony spokesperson told us "all existing Sony TV models with Netflix are unaffected."  Similarly, a Samsung spokesperson confirmed to us that this would only affect models purchased in the US and Canada. No purchased in Australia would be affected. Hisense also confirmed that it would not affect their models either.
It is unclear at this stage why models in Australia are not affected and whether they contain different DRM services compared to the US models concerned. We have asked Netflix to clarify this.
Philips and Panasonic are still responding with their confirmation, but given that no models appear to be affected in Australia, we have reached Netflix again to confirm whether any Australian models will be affected by the streaming service's sentencing. We will report back to you when we know it.
