American Express Gold Card Review [2019]

Later last year, American Express refreshed its popular Premier Rewards Gold Card and made some significant improvements. But they did not stop there, for the last few days they have announced further improvements on the card that make it even better.
In this post I wanted to review American Express® Gold Card ] which is a rewarding card for anyone who wants to earn as many membership fees as possible.
So let's look at the card details:
Amex Gold Card Welcome Bonus
Amex Gold Card offers a 35,000 membership wage points welcome bonus after spending $ 2000 within three months.
Personally, I reward membership cents of 1[ads1].7 cents each, so for me they are 35,000 points worth $ 595.
Please note that while these are the best publicly available welcome bonuses, there are sometimes better offers available through referrals from existing card members, so it is something to always take care of.

Amex Gold Card eligibility
Welcome bonus on this card is not available to those who have the card or those who have had Premier Rewards Gold Card earlier.
But, if you have had this card or Premier Rewards Gold Card before you still qualify for the card, but you are just not eligible for the welcome bonus. Under some circumstances it may still be worth getting the card in such situations if you want to take advantage of it on a continuous basis.
Amex Gold Card is a debit card
It is also worth noting that Amex Gold Card is a payment card . What is the difference between a credit card and a payment card?
- The basic distinction is that a credit card allows you to finance costs over time, while a debit card requires you to pay your entire balance every month
- while credit cards have credit limits, credit cards do not
But there is another important delimiter here if you are considering applying for this card:
- Usually you can have a maximum of five American Express credit cards at a time [19659016] Usually you can be approved for a maximum of two American Express 90-day credit cards
American Express payment cards are not subject to this limit. This means that you can be approved for the Amex Gold Card, even if you already have five American Express credit cards and even if you have already applied for two American Express credit cards in the last 90 days.
Amex Gold Card Annual Fee
Amex Gold Card has an annual fee of $ 250 (Prices and Fees), and it is not settled for the first year. While this is a steep annual fee, the card offers cards up to $ 220 a year annually, and also has some valuable bonuses for expenses in specific categories.
Amex Gold Card Bonus Categories
What makes Amex Gold Card so valuable are the bonus categories it offers. Amex Gold Card offers the following bonus categories:
- 4x Membership wages point to restaurants globally
- 4x Membership wages point to US supermarkets up to $ 25,000 in annual purchases
- 3x membership wages points on flights booked directly with airlines or through amextravel.com
This is an outstanding return on expenses. Based on my valuations, it's like a 6.8% return on restaurants globally and in US supermarkets.
To eat this card you even beat the 3x points that Chase Sapphire Reserve® offers on serving – this is a
Let us now look more closely at how these bonus categories are defined.
Amex Gold Card 4x points on restaurants
When the Amex Gold Card was introduced, it was only offered 4 times in restaurants in the US, but this has been extended to restaurants globally. There is no limit to how many bonus points you can earn from this.
In general, restaurants are defined quite broadly and include everything from fast food to cafes to fine dining.
Just be aware that convenience stores, nightclubs, and restaurants located within other businesses will generally not qualify for bonus points.
Furthermore, qualification of bonus points is determined based on how the seller chooses to be categorized. So there is a chance that some buyers may not be properly categorized at times.

Amex Gold Card 4x points in supermarkets
The Amex Gold Card offers 4x points on the first $ 25,000 offered every calendar year with US supermarkets. This excludes supermarkets and warehouse clubs, so don't expect you to earn the bonus points at Sam's Club.
Amex Gold Card 3x points on flights
Amex Gold Card offers 3x points on airline tickets without any restrictions on how many bonus points you can earn. This only applies when you book directly with an airline or via amextravel.com. Furthermore, charter flights and private jets are excluded.
Official booking through online travel agencies (except amextravel.com) would not earn you bonus points, but in practice it can sometimes be coded for 3x points. That's because often online travel agents still have airline bills directly when ordering flights through them.

Amex Gold Card annual credits
One of the things that well contribute to offset the annual fee of Amex Gold Card is that the card offers up to $ 220 in annual credits – this includes up to $ 100 airfare fee and up to $ 120 mid-credit
Amex Gold Card $ 100 Flight Credit
The first benefit is that Amex Gold Card offers a $ 100 annual airfare fee every calendar year. This is very similar to the credit offered on the Amex Platinum Card, it's only half as much.
Here are the basic terms to note:
- Purchasing both primary card and authorized users is eligible, but you are limited to a single credit no matter how many authorized users you have
- You can use credit for a purchase or over multiple purchases and it will continue to apply until you reach the $ 100 limit
- The cardmember has to select the airline they want credit
- The credit is potentially valid for purchases from most major US airlines, including US, Delta, Frontier, Hawaiian, JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit and United
- already selected an airline, you could change it once a year, every January; If you do not change it, the same airline will remain selected.
- The terms indicate that the credit should be sent within 2-4 weeks, but in my experience it adds much faster than that
So what kind of purchase is eligible? Under the terms, here are the purchases that are and are not eligible for the credit:
Fees not paid by the Card Member's chosen airline (eg, wireless internet and fees imposed by airline alliance partners) do not qualify for credit score statements. Random City Taxes Charged Prior to Selection of Qualifying Airlines Are Not Qualified for Statement Credits. Airline tickets, upgrades, mileage purchases, mileage points transfer fee, gift cards, duty free purchases, and price tickets are not considered additional fees.
Use the Fees Fee to Cover a Flight Charge
This credit can be useful for anything from luggage fees, ticket fees, to purchase fees, etc.
An interesting thing is that anecdotal buying select airline cards often triggers this credit. The terms do not support it, but there are many reports on the purchase of gift cards with some airlines that automatically trigger this. There is no guarantee that will always be the case, but from now on it is something that works with many airlines.
There is one reason I value this credit at face value, basically.
Amex Gold Card $ 120 dining credit
The second advantage is that Amex Gold Card offers a medium credit of up to $ 120 per year . This gives subscribers up to $ 10 per month in statement credits when paying with your card at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruth's Chris Steak House, Boxed, and participating in Shake Shack locations.
$ 120 medium credit is a bit more complicated:
- This credit applies to purchases with Grubhub, seamlessly, the cheesecake factory, Ruth's Chris Steak House, Boxed and participating Shake Shack sites
- Purchasing both the primary card member and authorized users are eligible, but you are limited to a single credit no matter how many authorized users you have
- The credit comes in the form of a $ 10 monthly credit, for a total of up to $ 120 credit each year
- Shake Shack places in ballparks, stadiums, airports and racetracks, are not eligible
- The terms indicate that this is not valid for gift certificates or purchase of goods, although there are some who guess whether it is enforced
- Only purchases in Unite d States qualify
- The terms indicate that The credit should enter within 2-4 weeks, but in my experience it adds much faster than that
Get up to $ 120 a year in value with Amex Amex Gold Card [19659023] Amex Gold Card is a spectacular card for anyone who eats a lot of money on food (either at restaurants or supermarkets) and who
Chase Sapphire Reserve® was the undisputed master when it came to to eat, but this card is now even more rewarding for serving (meanwhile Citi Prestige also offers 5x points on serving).
This card can be a wonderful addition to any other Amex card that earns membership fees points, including:
While the $ 250 annual fee is steep, hopefully most may recover Most of that fee spends up to $ 220 in annual credits . If you are someone who can maximize these, this is really a card that will cost you $ 30 a year "out of your pocket" and offers many great opportunities to earn points.
Bottom line
Not only was it Amex Gold Card is already an improved version of the former Premier Rewards Gold Card, but thus Amex continues to make this card better. The card now offers 4x membership pay points globally, and they have also added Boxed as a $ 10 monthly credit option.
