The American Dream mega mall will open October 25, according to an announcement from developer Triple Five.
The entertainment and shopping complex – located at the Route 3-New Jersey Turnpike interchange in East Rutherford – will open its doors on a Friday in the fall after many delays.
"We know that the community has been eagerly awaiting the launch of this incredible global destination," said Don Ghermezian, President of American Dream. We have a one-of-a-kind property that will reshape the way people think about entertainment, theme parks and shopping. ”
The Ghermezian family operates Triple Five Group, which also owns The Mall of America in Minnesota ̵[ads1]1; currently The largest mall in the country. When American Dream opens, it will be the largest mall in America at roughly 3 million square feet.
It will consist of 45 percent retail and 55 percent entertainment. An 8-acre Nickelodeon Universe indo or theme park will contain two record breaking roller coasters. There will be an 8-ac DreamWorks Waterpark, the first of its kind. The Big SNOW Ski and Snowboard Park will be North America's first indoor snow sports center. And American Dream will have a NHL-sized skating and hockey rink, a Angry Birds-themed 18-hole miniature golf course, a Legoland Discovery Center, an aquarium, a luxury movie theater and more.
Among the retailers that have signed on Barneys, Tiffany & Co., H&M, Saks Fifth Avenue, Zara and Dolce & Gabbana.
Bergen County's Blue Laws will keep stores at American Dream on Sundays but the entertainment and dining portions will be open 7 days a Week:
Dining at American Dream will include over 100 dining and specialty food options including more than 20 full-service restaurants, a 38,000-square-foot food hall; a Kosher food court; and a 22,000 square foot arcade-style gastropub.
Tuesday's announcement is the first time the developer has set a specific date for the complex to open. It announced a fall opening in May, after announcing a late summer opening in March. First of all, Triple Five projected on March 2019 opening.
The stops and stalls the development has experienced in its 17-year history have made it the butt of many jokes and the subject of skepticism. The project is currently on its third developer
Mills and Mack-Cali started construction on Xanadu in March 2005 with a 2007 opening date. Colony Capital took over in 2006. Construction stalled in 2009 when the money ran dry and in 2011 Triple Five acquired it.
In its May announcement, Triple Five said the opening would be phased with some elements opening in the fall and others near the holidays and into 2020. It is not clear what will be open on October 25. A spokesman for American Dream did not immediately respond to questions.
"About the coming week, American Dream will provide further insights to the property, its attractions, tenants and the exciting plans and events surrounding the opening and beyond, "the announcement Tuesday said.
Last week, American Dream announced a multi-million dollar, 10-year partnership with Coca-Cola.
