Amazon's global broadband ambitions start with 3,236 satellites

Amazon has confirmed that it is working to launch a satellite broadband service that will serve most of the world. The plans, first reported by GeekWire went under the code name "Project Kuiper", the name that refers to the icy asteroid band lying between Neptune and Pluto. They demanded a total of 3 236 satellites spread over three different heights of the soil path. The paperwork was filed by the FCC on behalf of Kuiper Systems, LLC.

In response to comment requests, Amazon issued an e-mail statement:

"Project Kuiper is a new initiative to launch a low-earth orbit satellite constellation that will provide low latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unnoticed and

This is a long-term project that anticipates serving tens of millions of people lacking basic access to broadband internet, and we look forward to working on this initiative with companies sharing this common vision. "

The company's response continues to say that the constellation will cover an area between 56th parallel north and 56th parallel south, a region containing about 95 percent of the world's population.

The largest satellite ISP competitors have already flown dishes to orbit. SpaceX has two prototypes in the air, and according to CNBC it seems to start up to 4,425 satellites. OneWeb, which has support from Sprint owner SoftBank, has six satellites up and can have as many as 650 in the future.

No timeline has been established for when Amazon wants all its dishes shuttled, but based on OneWeb cost estimates, the ecommerce giant can spend billions over several years.
