Amazon says drones will make deliveries in & # 39; months & # 39;
LAS VEGAS (AP) – Amazon said on Wednesday it plans to use self-contained drones to deliver packages to customers' homes in the coming months.
Online shopping giant did not give accurate timing or say where the drones will deliver.
Amazon said the new drones are using computer vision and machine learning to detect and avoid people or clothing lines in backyards as they land.
"From paragliders to power lines to a corgi in the backyard, the brain of Drone has security covered," says Jeff Wilke, who monitors the Amazon retail.
Wilke said the drones are completely electric, can fly up to 24 kilometers, deliver on 30 minutes and carry items weighing up to 5 pounds (2.3 kilos), like a paperback or toothpaste.
Amazon has been working on drone delivery for many years, back in December 201[ads1]3, Amazon CEO and founder told Jeff Bezos "60 Minute's "news show that drones would fly to the customer's home within five years. However, this deadline passed due to regulatory hurdles. [19659] Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates commercial use of drones in the United States, did not respond promptly to a request for comment. On Wednesday, a search giant subsidiary Google received FAA approval to obtain drone deliveries in parts of Virginia.
Wilke said the company is working on several regulatory agencies for approval.
"We expect to do it within months," he said.
