Airbnb embraces homework with place-blind equal pay model | Airbnb

Airbnb employees will be able to work from almost anywhere they want, the company has announced, and they will not see their pay docked if they move outside metropolitan areas.

The new model will apply to employees in the US, but also those in the UK and other countries. To make it work, the company said it would focus personal collaboration on roughly quarterly meetings and aim to pool the work into two product releases a year, said CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky.

“We want to hire and retain the best people in the world (like you),”[ads1]; Chesky wrote in an email to staff. “If we limited our talent pool to a commuter radius around our offices, we would have a significant disadvantage. The best people live everywhere, not concentrated in one area. And by recruiting from a diverse set of communities, we will become a more diverse company.

“Now I understand the anxiety of not seeing people in an office – how do you know if employees are doing their job when you can not see them? For me, it’s simple: I trust you, and flexibility only works when you trust people. in your team. ”

Employees will not be completely free to move as they wish. For tax reasons, they must have a permanent base in the country in which they are employed. If they work abroad, they can not spend more than 90 days a year in a given country, and are responsible for handling their own work permit. And they still need to consider time zones and think about how they actually get to the collections.

Crucially, however, the company will no longer pay people based on regional differences. “From June onwards, we will have individual wage levels by country for both wages and equity,” Chesky said. “If your salary was set at a lower place-based salary level, you will receive an increase in June.”

Other companies that have embraced teleworking have been less generous. Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Microsoft are asking all employees to take a pay cut if they move to a place with significantly lower living costs.

Airbnb is recovering from a difficult pandemic. The company, whose bookings fell as international travel fell away, laid off a quarter of its employees in May 2020, reducing investment in hotels and ultra-luxury apartments and halting plans to move to transport and content creation.

It was listed on the stock exchange in December 2020, an unpleasant period for a travel-focused company, but has maintained a market value of around $ 100 billion over the 18 months ago.
