9 cars not to be missed Autoplay View thumbnails View captions Last SlideNext Slide New American luxury cars, a favorite Toyota family drive SUV and – rarest! – A new mid-sized sedan is scheduled to debut at New York's auto show next week. Bizarre, the attention of the world's automakers will be shared because the second major spring car show in Shanghai, China, moved from its traditional dates a few weeks later to the same days as the traditional New York show. Pitting two major auto shows directly against each other is outstanding, especially at a time when events are struggling to keep car manufacturers' attention. Planning has led some companies to split their execs and designers into two layers to reveal the same vehicle almost simultaneously on opposite sides of the world. Others had to decide which of the world's two largest car markets will receive their A-team this week. At least there is good dim sum near Javit's convention center in Manhattan, though I wouldn't endure much hope for a collapsible piece at the National Convention and Exhibition Center, 14 miles from the Bund River District in Shanghai. Vehicles debuting in New York include: 2020 Cadillac CT5 It is likely to be a little shorter than the CTS sedan, it replaces the CT5 has a new design with a long hood and short back deck. Important questions will be passenger rooms and luggage capacity. The CT5 was designed to compete with the BMW 3 Series, the Audi A4 and the Mercedes C class, so a quality interior with luxurious and eye-catching materials is important. CT5 is the beginning of a reset for Cadillac's car line, which has pulled XTS, replaced the CTS and will soon release the smaller ATS in favor of a car called CT4. The new design looks sportier than the outgoing model, but has convenient features like a sliding back seat to maximize either legroom or cargo space. The Escape goes on sale this fall. The plug-in hybrid will arrive in 2020 and deliver more than 30 miles of battery power alone. (Photo: Hyundai Motor) Midsize sedan sales have hit a wall that customers are switching to SUVs, but Hyundai's 2020 Sonata introduces a new platform that will support a number of upcoming Hyundai cars and SUVs. Power comes from a 191-hp 2.5L or 180-hp turbo 1.6L four-cylinder engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission is likely. Then has a long nose, fast rear window and interesting faxes along the shoulder line. 2020 Hyundai Venue (Photo: Hyundai Motor) slot under $ 19,990 Wife as Hyundai's entry-SUV, designed to compete with Nissan's appealing little kicks. Expect a lot of driver assistance and connectivity features to appeal to young drivers and their parents. The premises are on sale in the fourth quarter. 2020 Lincoln Corsair Borrowing its name from fast sailing ships often used by buccaneers and other rogues, Corsair will share some of Escape's engineering, but add styling and features that are consistent with Lincoln's larger Nautilus and Navigator SUVs. A luxurious interior wrapped in high quality materials is also likely. It would be a surprise if Lincoln does not offer a hybrid or plug-in model. Corsair – who was also the name of a successful US Navy carrier-based aircraft in World War II – replaces Lincoln's completely compact SUV, The MKC. Lincoln Corsair will be selling late this year. Pre-automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, automatic rear braking, runway exit warning and automatic high beams is standard, an impressive list for a small and cheap car. Adaptive cruise control and blind spot alarm are alternatives. Power comes from a 1.6L four-cylinder engine developing 122 hp and 114 pound feet with torque. A five-speed manual transmission – yes, some still do – is standard, a continuous variable automatic and heated front seat is optional. Available features include Apple CarPlay, Android auto, automatic climate control, push button start; 2020 Subaru Outback The complete remaking of the Subaru model line is almost complete with this new version of its compact SUV. The Outback is Subaru's best-selling vehicle in the United States. The new model is based on the same platform as Ascent, Forester and Legacy. 2020 Subaru Outback (Photo: Subaru) The Outback is one of Subaru's keystone models. Don't expect dramatic changes in design or fuel technology, but the 2020 Outback provides the Subaru EyeSight package with safety and driver assistance. It's a scene to star. 2020 Toyota Highlander and Yaris 2020 Highlander is one of Toyota's core vehicles, a three-row SUV competing with popular SUVs such as Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot and Chevrolet Traverse. New styling will probably go for a more robust look, as Toyota did with its smaller RAV4 compact SUV last year. A fuel-saving hybrid drive and a comprehensive list of driver assist features will dump for passenger room headers and single entry / exit. Yaris subcompact hatchback is something of a contemplation, small, affordable and based on engineering from Mazda and Built on a Mexican plant sharing car manufacturers. Yaris is not a big seller, but it gives the Japanese giant a cheap entry model. 2020 Toyota Yaris (Photo: Toyota) Contact Mark Phelan at 313-222-6731 or mmphelan@freepress.com .
