6 injured after jet bridge "equipment failure" at Baltimore airport, officials say

Six people became hospital with life-threatening injuries after a jet bridge failed at a Baltimore airport, officials say.

Just before 8:00 am On Saturday, Southwest flight 822 arrived at the Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) from the Dominican Republic. Paramedics met the plane to "consider an on-board medical situation that occurred in a passenger plane," said a southwestern spokesman.

"While medical personnel helped the passenger off the plane, the airport-owned passenger load bridge experienced a mistake," said the spokesman.

"As you work to move the passenger from the plane, the jet bridge serving the airlock works," a BWI spokesman said in a statement. "Six people were injured this fall."

The injured were transported to local hospitals, according to BWI . BWI's chief fire officer Victor Ferreira said on Twitter that "involved personnel were taken to the area hospitals to be considered for minor injuries as a precaution."

The remaining passengers on the plane scheduled with the flight stairs, said the southwestern spokesman.

The beam bridge error is "under investigation" according to BWI.

No other airport operations were affected, BWI said.
