500 loser jobs in engineering in San Jose and Milpitas

Computer networks and telecom giant Cisco Systems Inc. have begun firing 488 California-based employees in a second round of demoralizing layoffs over the past 12 months stemming from the move to a software maker by a hardware manufacturer.

Based in San Jose In California, Cisco said that 397 of these employees come from the company's headquarters in San Jose while a further 91 work in Milpitas. It filed notice of termination with California's Employment Development Department on July 30.

The shootings, which began July 31, are "permanent in nature," said Saidah Grayson Dill, Cisco director of legal services in a notice filed to comply with state and federal requirements of the WARN Act.

However, Cisco claims that they will hire some of the fired employees.

Most of those currently laid off come from the company's engineering units. In San Jose, the most common jobs that are accepted are engineering executives, software engineers, and program managers.

Cisco said it will fire nearly 500 workers in South Bay in November 201[ads1]8. Prior to that, Cisco had fired 700 local employees in 2017 and 940 in 2016.

The continuing wave of layoffs can be blamed on Cisco's transition to software. Cisco expects to fire thousands of employees connected to the hardware business.

"Over the last few years, we have transformed Cisco and are driving innovation to deliver even greater value to our customers and partners," according to a statement from Cisco about the fires.

"It is important that we make decisions to continuously ensure that our investments and resources are in line with strategic business growth areas and customer requirements."

Employee redundancy has become a hallmark of the tenure as CEO. Chuck Robbins, who took over the top job in 2015.

"We're four years in, and I'm really proud of what our teams have accomplished," Robbins said in an earnings speech Wednesday.

Cisco employs more than 14,000 people in the Peninsula and South Bay, ranked by only Apple and Google's parent company Alphabet in the region, totaling employees in 2018.
