2020 Porsche Taycan: The Empire Strikes Back

If traceability, reliability, solidity, touchpoints and feel do not matter to you, it is a company based in Fremont with the perfect alternative. I bought the Model 3 for very different reasons. Emotions were the one, Autopilot was the other. I wanted the future, and for many years only Tesla sold it. Well, clickbait writers, idiots and shills would discuss whether Taycan is a Tesla killer or not, but it's clearly not. Does Taycan compete directly with a Model 3? And X? And S? No. And no.

Taycan is another facet of the future, and it is in a different class than any Tesla.

The Model S is a family sedan with twice as much loading capacity as Taycan's <1[ads1]5 cubic feet. The rear seat is more spacious. Tesla offers Autopilot – the latest pathway technology – which is a huge convenience for long drives. The P100D is a little faster off the line, but does it matter? Any Model S – like any Taycan – will accelerate off the line faster than most internal combustion vehicles ever made since the dawn of the car period. (FYI: Tesla's sweet spot is 100D. Trust me.)

By comparison, Taycan is the first real electric sports car, built to be used as one, and built to last. The fact that it has two extra doors and a usable rear seat is simply a bonus, as is the fact that all four seats are more comfortable than anything else in a Tesla. It is the opposite of mobility devices such as the Nissan Leaf and Chevy Bolt. It's totally emotional. Like obscenity, you know it when you see it. The specifications hardly matter. It is designed to be run. That Taycan comes from Porsche makes perfect sense.

Yes, Taycan's 280 miles with WLTP rated range is obviously inferior to the Model S 100D's EPA-certified 370, but the Electrify America network will charge at much faster speed than any Tesla Supercharger's current specification, a step up Taycan 39; s 800-volt battery is founded to accept

Tesla fans will be bitching and complaining about Taycan's lack of "Full Self-Driving" ability, but I have bad news for them. As a happy Tesla owner working in the self-driving industry, the likelihood of your Tesla reaching Level 5 autonomy anytime soon is zero. Level 4? There is another article, but they probably won't like it.

Newsflash : Taycan is for people who want to run, and keep doing it. That's why Porsche exists as a company. If you don't understand it, no Porsche was ever made for you, and the company may as well not exist.

But it exists – and continues to grow – because it meets deep human needs, no companies can ever solve. The need for change. To be different. To own the future. These needs are resolved when people save to move from a Honda deal to a Tesla Model 3. These needs are addressed when five friends of mine say they would never buy a Tesla, but they trade in the Porsche 911s for the Taycans. [19659002] Questions remain. When will Porsche release the cheaper model with more reach that was hinted at? Porsche mentioned updates on the air (OTA) at a former workshop, but did not talk about them at the disclosure. What features can be upgraded? Will they update / unlock more range from current batteries? What will the Porsche lane be capable of? Will Innodrive 2 be something like Tesla Autopilot? Porsche mentioned C.A.S.E (Connectivity, Autonomy, Sharing, Electrification) a lot on the pre-disclosure. What is the driver's help for Taycan?

As a Tesla owner, I am delighted that Porsche has finally released an alternative electric vehicle that is beautiful, emotional, and sufficiently different from Tesla to allow the EV sector to expand rather than cannibalize itself. Porsche should be very proud. Many other car manufacturers had the time and money to deliver an emotionally charged electric vehicle. They failed, and Tesla ran away with the sector for years.

These days are over. Taycan is what happens when companies bring their best concepts to life. I want to own one of the hearts, but I have two years left on a Model 3 I absolutely love, and I only had one baby, which means that how much I want, the needs must come first. Maybe these needs will be met by the Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo instead.

Coming soon: my Tesla vs Taycan comparison. Guaranteed to anger many.
