Success story: eighth model in the compact car family
Globally, one of three Mercedes-Benz cars is now an SUV, and one in four a
compact model. A compact SUV such as GLB therefore combines all the success factors for the company's highest volume.
With the new GLB, the global compact car family from Mercedes-Benz now comprises
of eight models: A-Class, A-Class Sedan and A-Class AC Class Sedan, B-Class, CLA Coupe, CLA Wagon and GLA is already on the market
. In 2018, over 609,000 customers worldwide were able to deliver
a compact model delivery. Since the A-class was launched in 1997, over 6.5
million vehicles from this segment have been sold worldwide by MercedesBenz. In the United States, the CAP will join the compact car family currently
including A-Class Sedan, CLA Coupe and GLA.
Ready to board: up to seven seats
The GLB is the first compact vehicle from Mercedes-Benz to offer an optional
third row of two additional seats. The extensive safety equipment includes
retractable head restraints, seat belt with belt tensioners and a side window airbag
which also protects the passengers in the third seat post. In addition, GLB
provides ISOFIX and TOP-Tether anchorages for appropriate child seats, and these
can be used to attach up to four child seats at the back.
Third row comfort details include two drinking holders between the seats such as
as well as two storage compartments with a rubberized insert on the left and
right in the cargo compartment, each with a USB-C port. The seats can be folded
so that they are flushed with the load chamber floor to expand the load chamber.

Offroad orientation: exterior design
The powerful proportion of GLB emphasizes its off-road design. The shapes
are emphasized, while lines are minimized and the seams
are made with high precision. The rising front profile with its striking
lamps is a clear sign of terrain genes, such as the short overhangs on
front and back.
The muscular vehicle's shoulder dominates the side image at the height of the Cpillar, an effect enhanced by the rising waist. The doors extend across the side of the
bar, making it easier to access, while opening the door free of dirt, such as
and increasing side load protection. All-round protective
claddings share the overall proportions and emphasize the vehicle's off-road
character, making the front and rear optical anchor protection.
"The iconic design gives Mercedes-Benz GLB an unmistakable SUV
character," says Gorden Wagener, chief design manager at Daimler AG. "The
clear forms with reduced lines and powerful surfaces convey our design
philosophy for Sensual Purity."
With aluminum details: interior design
The instrument panel consists of a single piece, which has optical recesses in the
driver and front passenger area. There is a widescreen cockpit facing the
driver while the functions and displays are controlled via the MBUX (MercedesBenz User Experience). A new feature is the off-road tubular element of an aluminum appearance surrounding the lower portion of the instrument panel and
housing the three round center air openings. These provide dashboard support and
create an impression of robustness, power and a certain element of fun. Under
the air vents are the air conditioning control panel, whose buttons make
the impression that they are painted from a solid aluminum cylinder.
The interior has a robust character in the center console. Tubular
elements in a machined appearance provide strength to the design of the components and
controls. Next to the doors, the SUV sign is accentuated by its horizontal
grip handles as part of the standard design and equipment line. This forms a robust part of the door panel structure, which resembles a modified aluminum pipe.
Spot on for hills and valleys
The LED high quality lamps are available for GLB on request.
These allow extremely fast and precise, electronically controlled adjustment
of the headlights to suit today's traffic conditions.
As an alternative, there is also front fog light with LED technology. They can
distribute the light to reach a wider area than the headlamps, and
can thus increase the illumination in peripheral areas, while their low
position in the front bumper helps reduce the risk of flashing oncoming traffic.
From A for assistance to M for MBUX: the technical details
GLB benefits from the technical highlights of the current compact
generation from Mercedes-Benz. These include in particular:
The 4-cylinder gas engine, which was completely updated to
restarts the compact model series. Compared to the previous
generation, they excel with significantly increased specific outputs,
improved efficiency and lower emissions.
The driver assistance systems with cooperative support for the
driver and functionality of the S-Class: thanks to improved camera
and radar systems, the GLB can look up to 1641 feet in front and can
drive partially autonomously in certain situations . For example,
can adjust the speed before corners, intersections or
roundabouts using Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC with
using map and navigation data. As a new feature of the active
steering assistant, it is also the intuitive Active
Long Change Assist. If the active parking assistant with PARKTRONIC is
in addition on board, the GLB also has the function extended to
automatically again in traffic jam.
Comfort suspension: on the front, the GLB MacPherson
] spring braces on the back of an acoustic and vibration-proof
decoupled multi-coupling shaft with compression springs. Adaptive
adjustable damping is available on request. With this, the driver
can switch between more comfort or especially sporty tuning via the
DYNAMIC SELECT switch.
The intuitively operated infotainment system MBUX – Mercedes-Benz
User experience: The powerful computer, brilliant screens and
graphics, individualizable imaging, all-color head-up display,
magnified navigation reality, learning-competent software and the voice control that can be activated with "Hi Mercedes" is the key
advantages of the system.
Adding more traction: 4MATIC all-wheel drive
GLB can be equipped with permanent drive wheel drive 4MATIC,
with variable torque distribution. This sporty all-wheel drive configuration
allows the driver to use the DYNAMIC SELECT switch to affect the
properties of 4MATIC. Three characteristic programs are available for controlling the all-wheel clutch, even though the system responds flexibly to the current driving situation in any mode. In normal driving operation the drive
program "Eco / Comfort" is based on a distribution of 80:20 (front axle: rear axle),
while in "Sport" it is 70:30. In terrain mode, the all-wheel clutch functions as
an inter-axle lock, with the fundamental distribution balanced 50:50.
4MATIC components include power take-offs on the rear axle which are
integrated into the automated dual coupling, and the rear axle
differential with an integrated multi-plate coupling. This is electro-mechanical
operated. By means of a track wheel and ball lamp, an electric motor exerts an axial force
on the coupling package to open or close the plates. Rear axle differential
compensates the different roads / rotational speeds of the rear wheels.
The advantages of this control system are above all non-rpm dependent operation
over the entire operating range, pilot control of the clutch, while the position
is stationary and higher efficiency thanks to the ball ramp concept. [19659006] Useful in light off-road terrain: Offroad engineering package
Off-road Engineering Package, supplied as standard on GLB 250
4MATIC, includes an additional travel program. It adapts the motor's
power supply and ABS control to light terrain terrain away from paved
roads. It can be activated via the DYNAMIC SELECT switch.
Other parts of the Offroad engineering package:
An animation of the driving conditions can be retrieved in the media
. The realistic presentation of gradient, slope and
technical settings helps the driver to judge maneuvers properly.
The Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR)
system automatically assumes a pre-selected, low speed between approx. 1
and 11 km / h, it can be read out in the instrument cluster and in
optional main display. Powerful and efficient engine
The new GLB relies on the four-cylinder gas engine that
was completely updated to restore the compact model range. Compared to the previous generation
it is characterized by significantly increased power,
improved efficiency and emissions.
The two-liter M 260 engine of the GLB 250 has cast iron cylinder lining in its
cast aluminum engine block, which extends at the lower end as in the
CONICSHAPE® principle. Internally, the cylinder drilling process describing
is known as "trumpet honey". This minimizes stamp friction and cut
consumption. In the aluminum valve with 4 valves, it is possible to adjust the valve lift on the
inlet side, with the variable valve timing system CAMTRONIC
.
